Recreational Program (U6-U18) Description

Our recreational (house league) program is for both beginners and developing players, as well as players who want to enjoy the game of soccer in a no-pressure atmosphere.  The program consists of girls and boys teams in the U6 through U18 age brackets (co-ed for U6).  The house league season is an eight-week schedule running from the start of June to the start of August. The league is non-results oriented up through the U10 level.

U6: 3v3 (no gks)          U10: 6v6 (gks)

U8: 4v4 (no gks)          U12-U18: 8v8 (gks)

The Recreational Program aims to:

·         To help players learn the game of soccer along with the technical, tactical, physical, and psychological skills associated with playing it.

·         To provide an atmosphere focused on fun and participation that will foster a love of the game of soccer and physical activity.

U6-U10 Player Development

U6 Description

Players in this age group participate in one hour session on  vcxza during the summer season.   Each session will begin by working on basic soccer and movement skills and conclude with 3v3 games.  Basic rules will also be emphasized.  CMYSA will provide instructors for these sessions, but active parent involvement is highly encouraged.

U8-U10 Description

These age groups will be taught the following skills: Dribbling, Trapping, Passing, and Shooting.  Basic rules and some basic tactics will also be emphasized. Each night will consist of 30 minutes of skill instruction followed by a 30 minute game.

Team coaches are required to attend to not only help in "crowd control", but to learn how to teach different skill techniques.  This is a tool in helping our volunteer coaches gain knowledge and confidence in coaching soccer.  Team coaches will then serve as games managers to ensure the rules are followed throughout each game.  CMYSA will educate each coach on the rules, basic tactics, and games management when gear and equipment are first picked up at Whitney Fields.

CMYSA's goal is to give our players a good base on which to develop the skills required for soccer, and also to give our coaches the tools, knowledge, and confidence to effectively teach the game.

Coaching Education U6-U10

Coaches, check out the Coaches Corner Tab for some resources.

CMYSA will also be providing options for coaches and parents to learn basic soccer skills techniques, tactics, and rules before the start of the Summer Season.

Recreational Program FAQs

Can we have our friends all play on the same team?

Teams are formed in a random draw for the purpose of creating a fair/balanced distribution of playing talent among all teams participating

Why don’t we keep league standings?

Recreational soccer is designed to teach players soccer skills, teamwork and sportsmanship.  Participation and fun are emphasized, not competition.  If your child is interested in a more focused and competitive soccer experience, check out our “Travel” program.

How is the year-end tournament selected?

League playoffs are random draws

Why do the younger kids play small sided games?

Small sided games allow for more touches for each player.  This is crucial to the skill development of young players.  The decision-making and tactics are also simpler in small sided games, which allow young players to learn the game more effectively.  Small sided games are supported by CMYSA, MYSA and the US Soccer Federation.
