QUESTION AND ANSWERS ABOUT 2021 TRYOUTS

Q: When and how do I register?
A: Registration for tryouts and the 2021 season opens October 1, 2020. The link will be available on our "Registration" page as well as on our home page. Tryout registration must be completed by October 22.

Q: How do I know which registration to complete?
A: There will be two options when registering your child for the 2021 season.

  • Option 1: FULLY register your player with our club. This means you are committing to CMYSA prior to tryouts and want to be a CMYSA travel player regardless of the team you are placed on. The registration price ($315-$400) includes the cost of tryouts. This is recommended for players who know they want to be part of CMYSA regardless of placement.
  • Option 2: Register for tryouts only. This means you are NOT committing to CMYSA until rosters are posted after tryouts. The registration fee is $75 and will NOT be credited towards your registration fee if you decide to sign up with CMYSA after teams are posted. This option is recommended for players who are unsure if they want to play travel soccer or whose participation in CMYSA soccer is dependent on their team status or teammates. These players will have 1 week after teams are posted to register for CMYSA and claim their roster spot.

Q: What if I am unable to attend tryouts?
A: Any player who is unable to attend tryout sessions must register for tryouts. On the registration form indicate your player is unable to attend tryouts AND email Emily Willaert at Emily@cmysa.org and inform her of your player's name, year, team s/he is trying out for and what date(s) s/he is unavailable.

Q: What if I don’t make the team I am trying out for?

A: CMYSA cannot guarantee a player will make an elevated team. However, CMYSA does make a concerted effort to roster every player who signs up for tryouts. If player numbers or the appropriate playing level cannot be met, players will be referred to the CMYSA recreation program or another competitive club. If this occurs and you have FULLY registered for CMYSA, a refund will be granted. Withdraws due to not making the team a player wants will follow CMYSA's normal refund policy.

Q: What team will my child be placed on if he/she cannot attend tryouts?

A: CMYSA attempts to act in the best interest of the player but recognizes the importance of player evaluation in a tryout setting. Therefore, individuals who cannot attend tryouts will most likely be placed on the lowest competitive team of his/her age group.

Q: How does my player tryout for multiple age groups (play up)?

A: 9U to 12U players: If a player wants to play up, s/he must attend both tryout sessions for both his/her current age group and the older age group. Only players assessed in the top 25% of both their current age group AND the older age group will be allowed to play up.  If a child doesn’t meet the criteria to play up, the player is placed based on ranking for actual age group.
A: 13U and older: If a player wants to try out for an older League One team AND be considered for their own year League One team, s/he needs to attend both tryouts. If they only want to be considered for the older age group, they only need to attend that tryout. The top 16 to 18 players will be taken for each team regardless of age.

Q: When do I show up for my tryout and what should I bring?

A: Arrive 20 minutes prior to start time to check in and warm up.
Bring:

  • Shin guards (Players without shin guards will NOT BE ALLOWED TO TRYOUT)
  • Water
  • Soccer ball
  • Soccer cleats or flat soled shoes.
  • A safety strap is needed for prescription eyeglasses.
  • Face mask (may be removed while playing soccer)
  • Completed SCSU Covid Screener: https://mnscu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1HAgGHJbBzcyDCl

Q: Who evaluates players and why?

A: High school and licensed area coaches as well as college players are invited to evaluate age groups. High school coaches will not be used to evaluate players they coach and club coaches will not be used to evaluate age groups containing their child(ren).
Many of our coaches are volunteer parents. While most of these individuals are able to remain unbiased, CMYSA does not want to put coaches in the middle of team formation (creating rifts between parents and players) and wants to ensure that other motivations (high school team success, parent or friendship motives) do not skew team formation. We also do not want to place a new player at a disadvantage compared to other players.

Q: Why do the current age group coaches NOT evaluate their team at tryouts?

A: The purpose of tryouts is to evaluate players on an equal playing field. In order to minimizes bias (both good and bad) that comes with working with players for an extended period of time, individuals who are not familiar with the players help conduct tryouts. Coaches' feedback is considered in player placement through a feedback form which includes: overall rankings, practice/game attendance, attitude and other applicable comments.

Q: What does the tryout process look like?
A: Tryout format:

  • Warm up with technical skill
  • Small sided activity 3 v 3 to 5 v 5
  • Large Sided Game (as close to full sided as numbers allow)

Q: What are players assessed on?
A: Evaluators will be responsible for providing comments on players and producing an overall player score for each player. CMYSA will compile data from the assessments and create a final roster for each team based on previous season feedback (if available) and evaluation scores.

  • Field Players:
    • Technical skills
    • Understanding and implementation of tactical ideas
    • Communication
    • Attitude and Focus
    • Overall athleticism
  • Goalkeepers:
    • Technical Skills: Shot stopping, crosses, footwork, etc.
    • Overall positioning
    • Distribution and footwork
    • Communication and command of their back line

*Goalkeeper 11U to 15U will be evaluated as both a field player and goalkeeper. Players 16U and up can be evaluated as a goalkeeper only.

Q: When will teams be posted?
A: Teams will be posted  by November 1. Our 9U and 10U team rosters will be posted in February. Our 18U boys teams will be announced by December 1.

Q: How do I accept or decline a roster spot?
A: If players already registered for the 2021 CMYSA Travel Season, they do NOT have to complete any additional registration to accept his/her spot. If a player registered only for tryouts, s/he must complete the CMYSA Travel Registration within 2 weeks of teams being posted. If a player is not registered by this time, his/her spot can be given to a registered player from another team. If a player does not want to participate on CMYSA after teams are announced, please email Emily Willaert at Emily@cmysa.org. Players who have preregistered for the 2021 season will follow CMYSA's normal refund policy.

Q: What if I need help paying Travel Team fees?

A: CMYSA is committed to providing a high-quality and affordable youth soccer program. The Financial Assistance program was created to provide some fee reduction for families that cannot afford to play soccer. Information about qualifying for financial assistance can be found at: www.cmysa.org/financialassistance. Funds are limited and award on a first come first serve basis. Families applying for Financial Assistance must register with Option 1 in order to complete the FA application. $50 will be due at the time of registration.

Q: What if I am interested in coaching a team?

A: CMYSA is dedicated to providing quality coaching for all its teams. In order to provide stability for the team, all coaches will ideally be in place prior to tryouts. If you are interested in coaching a team in the 2021 season, please email Emily Willaert (emily@cmysa.org). Coaches will need to have completed their Concussion Training, Safe Sports Training  and signed the Coach Code of Ethics and Conduct Agreement prior to being considered for a coaching position.

Families have TWO options for registration

  • Option 1: FULLY REGISTER TO CMYSA prior to tryouts
  • Registration Fee for 9U & 10U is $315, registration fee for 11U-18U is $400
  • Financial Aid (FA) Recipients pay $50 and must complete the application on the full registration. Players who receive FA must purchase their own uniform this year.
  • Do not complete this registration until you are sure you want to participate with us for the 2021 season. If your are unsure complete registration option 2 (see below)
    • Benefits:
      • Cheaper: tryout fee is included in the registration fee
      • Faster: no additional registration needs to be completed after tryouts and teams are posted
    • Downside:
      • Potentially more expensive: If your player does not make the team s/he wants and decides NOT to accept this roster spot, you will only receive a partial refund (see middle of page for refund policy https://www.cmysa.org/cmysareg)
  • Option 2: Register for TRYOUTS only
    • Benefits:
      • Certainty: player knows who is on their team and what level of team s/he is placed on prior to committing to the 2021 season
      • Time: families have more time to decide if they are going to participate in travel soccer prior to registering
    • Downside:
      • More expensive: registering for Tryouts Only costs $75 which will not be put towards a player's registration fee if they decide to join CMYSA

Players born in 2012 (9U) and 2011 (10U)

  • Attending evaluations is recommended but not mandatory.
  • TRYOUT DATE: October 24th, 2020 at SCSU Turf Field Dome
    • If tryouts cannot occur during this time due to COVID-19 restrictions or weather, tryouts will occur during the first weeks of winter training
  • All players will be placed on a team and play at a black level
    • This is the higher level of play and typically requires less travel time to away games ideal for young players
  • If two teams can be created, teams will be evenly split
    • At this age, difference in level is typically related to game experience. Allowing experienced and inexperienced players to participate together boosts the growth of the group
    • Teams will not be created until February after we can also observe players at winter training to ensure evenly created teams are possible.
  • During winter training, all players participate in combined training (meaning all players in an age group train together). This exposes players to different levels of play, allows them to meet new teammates, and prepares them for when rosters will merge at older age groups.
  • Coaches:
    • We rely on parent volunteers to coach this age group. CMYSA provides curriculum and training to these parents.

Players born in 2010 (11U) and 2009 (12U)

  • Players must be evaluated to be placed on a black team. If a player is unable to attend the scheduled date and time and wants to be considered for a black team, please contact DOC to make alternate arrangements
  • TRYOUT DATE: October 24th, 2020 at SCSU Turf Field Dome
  • CMYSA does its best to place EVERY player on a team at these ages. Teams will participate at a 11U black, 12U black or a combined 11/12U blue team.
    • The combined age group for blue is what MYSA offers. If a blue team is created it will either be a mix of 2010 and 2009 players or only 2009 players. We would not have a group of only 2010 players compete at the 12U level.
  • If two teams can be created, we will split teams between the black and blue level
    • At this age, many players have various differences in game experience, are experiencing different levels of growth, and benefit from increased touches on the ball that occurs if teams are split by level. Who a player is today is not who a player will be tomorrow.
  • Teams will be created after evaluations.

Tryouts for Players born in 2008 to 2003

  • TRYOUT DATE: October 25th at SCSU Turf Field Dome
    • If tryouts cannot occur during this time due to COVID-19 restrictions or weather, tryouts will occur during the first weeks of winter training
    • Only players who want to compete on a LEAGUE ONE FIRST DIVISION TEAM (C1) need to attend evaluations. All other players will be placed on a black team at their age group.
  • CMYSA does its best to place EVERY player on a team. However, if a player cannot adequately compete at the level of play of his/her age group, s/he may be placed on an OLDER age group at a lower competitive level to find an appropriate level of play
  • CMYSA tries to tier teams when player numbers are sufficient to allow players to compete at an appropriate level. However, due to club numbers, multiple teams are not always feasible at every age group and banded teams (2 age groups combined) are used at the BLUE level for MYSA league
  • During winter training, we try to pair teams of similar levels and age to help increase training numbers.

We will be offering League One First Division Teams in the following age groups

  • Combined 2007 and 2008 Girls (14U) - any 2008 or 2007 girl is welcome to tryout
  • Combined 2007 and 2008 Boys (14U) - any 2008 or 2007 player is welcome to tryout
  • 2006 (15U) Boys
  • 2005 (16U) Boys
  • Combined 2005 and 2004 Girls (17U) - any 2005 or 2004 girl is welcome to tryout

We anticipate offering BLACK teams at the following age groups

  • Girls: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2003/2004
  • Boys: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2003/2004
    • Due to numbers, we may have to combine age groups as well at our black levels. If age group combinations are needed we will consider whether to place them at a black or blue level. MYSA only offers blue every other year (i.e. 14U, 16U and 18U). If a team is composed of 17U and 16U players they will participate at a 17U black level so the 16U players do not need to play up 2 years. If a team is composed of 14U and 13U players we would look at the team to see where their success and growth would be best.

Only players who want to compete on a LEAGUE ONE FIRST DIVISION TEAM need to attend evaluations. All other players will be placed on a black team at their age group.

  • This decreases the amount of players who have to attend tryouts during COVID
  • Parents/Guardians need to indicate on their registration if their player wants to tryout for a League One team.
  • If a player does not make the League One team, s/he will be placed on a black team of his/her birth year
  • We try to utilize paid non-parent coaches at this level. If a parent is interested in coaching a 13U or older team, please contact DOC Emily Willaert (emily@cmysa.org)

How to decide if a player wants to tryout for a League One Team

  • League One teams have a higher commitment in both time and expense. Players competing at this level can participate in other sports but need to communicate with their coaches.
  • Playing time is NOT equal. Coaches will try to get every player into every game, but this is not a requirement. Playing time is based on attendance, versatility in positions, and success of the player and team.
  • If players will always prioritize their other activity over soccer, we recommend a black level of play.
  • If your player wants to tryout for a LEAGUE ONE team and is unable to attend tryouts for their age group, contact Director of Coaching, Emily Willaert at Emily@cmysa.org
